I’ve been studying clouds. The colours, the shapes, the structures – they are a kind of changeable architecture, with layers and levels. They’re also a nice, meditative break, a restorative pause.
With that in mind, I approached this piece. I started by using two separate compositions and cutting them up, re-sewing, reattaching, reimagining them completely, and then building, tier by tier, raw edge appliquéing and cutting in curves and waves. I used cotton, linen, and vintage silk brocade lamé, improvising as I went, from initial sketches to piecing to quilting.
Like a cloud, this piece took shape right before my eyes.
